Cloning

Post by Dodger » Tue Aug 16, 2005 11:15 pm

whats your view on this?

in my opinion, the greatest concern with cloning is that it will eliminate the genetic variation, without which one single stupid little virus or bacteria could wipe out the entire species in one big swoop.

My thoughts are that I'm for the research as a medical aid. As for your concern, I doubt cloning is going to be that widespread in my lifetime. No worries on my part there.

As much as I hate to agree with convicted felons, I am with Josan on this one.

Cloning will never get to the point were there's 200,000 Kevin Costner's walking around or something like that, but limiting the research on this kind of tech because of issues that are most likely total science fiction is not worth it at this point. Maybe 10 years from now I might have an opinion, but for now, go scientists go!

Imagine if you needed a liver transplant and didn't have to wait for someone your "type" to die in some car crash to get it, or some baby that needed a new heart very quickly.

If the technology is there, go for it.

I'm also more worried about designer genes, than copy genes.

I'm all for replicating lost, damaged or malfunctioning body parts, that would be a quantum leap in medicine (for those who can afford it).

As for a world where humans are bred for specific purposes with specialised genetic traits, that scares me. First step towards becoming "hum-ants" :?

cloning science is very young, and hasn't many uses yet, there is a certain moral dilemma with the thing, being that clones, whether only used to serve as spare organs, will be treated in a different view than 'real' humans. It is so far away to even think of such things happening, implantation of animal organs seems of more direct use.
As for the science fiction idea of cloning, it would be very good to try to uncover that topic, though not in my lifetime, if they do though, i think it should only be used in colonization, with a good share of random genetic material, to increase population to a decent amount.
(maybe i'd even say that any other way will surely lead to incredible disagreement between people until all are non-believers]

had a feeling like we've been through something similar to this before

i'm still at the same place, cloning is absolutely useless apart for as a step in scientific research, face it people aren't going to be cloning themselves all over even if they could(apart for a few morons(relatively few)), so dodge, you have no need to fear from a massive dilution of genetic variation, if it happens it won't be due to cloning, complete genetic engineering however might get that done but that is much further away and hopefully people wont be dumb enough to fall for that (though they probably will, thank goodness the poor will still be around to keep diversity as they wont be able to afford this)

as for raising clones for spare organs, it would probably be too expensive to actually do, not to mention there are probably better alternatives around the corner working with stem cells (though god don't like that either)

^i on the other hand fully support stem cell research but contrary to the common belief it has nothing to do with the cloning as we know it. stem cells are gathered from blastula and not the embryo itself so i dont see how it relates to anything that can take away human life or interfere with it in any way since blastula is, well we dont really know what it is, but its basically a sack of undifferentiated cells and it doesnt represent much by itself without a host, and it bears no resemblance to human life whatsoever. its a potential embrio but its not an embrio yet, and before it can take shape of an embrio with three distinctive layers you could interfere and direct it to grow any tissue of the human body in unlimited quantities since stem cells divide indefinitely.
and now i see the link between the two, to establish an efficent organ tissue production line all the indiferrences need to be eliminated. one magic pill treats all, isnt that what every business tycoon wants? to cover the whole market? my worst fears are back on.

Wow, for once I totally agree with you, Dodger. I plan on becoming a gene therapist in the future, and if that doesn't work, I can always TAKE OVER THE WORL- uh, I mean, run a comic store.

^fudge you and your boring uniformed world you sicko! i wanna see some diversity. if we were all identical and indifferent we wouldnt have much of a discussion going on at these forums now would we?

and your comics are boring too, and your momma...im gonna shut up now.

no im gonna say it, your momma is so fat, whenever she wears high heels she strikes oil.
