Luring in Lurkers (and other proposed changes)

Post by Joseph » Tue Dec 27, 2005 10:48 am

One might think that the forums are rather slow these days. Well, they are and they aren't.

Each month, about 60-75 registered users log on and visit the boards. However, it's only the usual 15 or so posting so, the question is:

What can we do to lure out the lurkers and get that other 75% posting?

Do we need more regular/frequent content on the site?

Do we need controversay? We're mostly left wing. Maybe we need the excitement of right wingers to show up and start a good old fashioned flame war.

Do we need gimmicks like free cookies or penguins?

Any thoughts/suggestions?

EDIT: Ah bloody hell. We forgot to reinstall the Global Announcement mod after the last update.

That's what I thought too. Well Jan, when you do find your way to a pc with net access, let us know.

While we wait for Jan's suggestions here are a few things I'm thinking.

Aesthetics

Customizing the templates. Other than the logo, we're using all three "stock". I personally think we only need two, a dark and a light and AFAIK Spider is the only one who uses illusion, but hey, he likes it and I like it a hell of a lot more than subSilver. What I would like is new buttons for the index pages (new posts, no new posts, locked, reply etc) that are the same on all templates.

Some colour would be nice too. Alone, illusion is probably the best. subDark is black with shades of grey and as for subSilver, well, let me say that I hate, fucking hate loathe and despise subSilver. But every time in the past, when we had far more users, that I wanted to trash it the majority always complained because they liked it, bland generic swill that it is. I suppose I can live with it if it has shiny new buttons and some slight colour change.

Functionality

The survey. Ok, this thing hasn't worked since we redid the site back in August. It worked in the initial tests and then died. We just left it. Since August. *shrugs*

Don't request a lot of mods. I've never seen the need for excessive features and ensuring they work with all three templates is more work than return.

Content

Ok, this is our Achilles heel. The people that are in charge of content, the WW team, are often the ones least likely to supply it. Each of us has a tendency to take extended sabbaticals. I call it neurosis. Spider calls it the glue that keeps us together.

Our news posts are often weeks apart. Our interviews come in the first half of the year then disappear in the last half. Actually, we had four more interviews that fell through, one voice actor from Planescape - Torment, one with a dev at Obsidian and two with well known fantansy artists. Two of those interviews were apparently completed and never returned. *shrugs*

As well, we've never really got the level of member contribution we were hoping for either. Let's face it. The Arts section of the site is empty except for an artist's profile from when we first launched the site and some work from Gorth. The Literature section is a little better but still, aside from two memebers of the WW team, only three members contributed. Part of that, I've been told, is that the concept of Winterwind isn't clear. Even the people who understand the concept say it isn't clear to most. Is Winterwind gaming or is it arts? Well, as has been said before, it's both because game design incorporates various arts and is one in and of itself. The other part of the equation is that there weren't as many artistically inclined members as we thought. *shrugs*

So...

I should be somewhere else, but I have a few minutes left.

I am gamer and games (and girls and porn) interest me - or that's how it used to be (now it's just girls and porn).

What's the attraction? Points of interest, purpose, framework, cuteness?

Damn, no time left.

If you remove illusion I'll just add it back and password protect the folder.

I'd never remove it. I used it for almost a year before I discovered subDark. And I still love the WW logo on that template.

MWUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Spider and I made the executive decision to delete the subSilver template. Modifying three templates when upgrading/adding mods etc is rather nasty. It is gone. Gone I say!

Illusion is now the default. Same basic colours. blue and white, just "prettier". Your alternative is subDark.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
I do bugger-all, but that's OK;
I sleep all night, and I read all day!

This was taken live from a 3-way MSN chat only moments ago:
Josan: "Janmanden is demanding subSilver be returned"

Spider: "ha ha ha"

CatBoris: "fudge him"
