Reasons why ppl are still coming here

Post by Runenklinge » Mon Aug 03, 2009 2:54 pm

So, with members coming back and some of us having been around for a long time, and Josan being unsatisfied with the traffic the site receives, I think it would be interesting to hear why those people who actually do come here do and have been doing so. I'll start:

1. people with an interest in/knowledge of obscure but fun games (RPGs mostly) with Black Isle's games being the most obvious.

2. You can ask just about any question and get a meaningful answer without having to read through 10 posts of pure crap (very rare on today's internets)

3. even the spam here is delicious.

note the the ezine is not a reason for me to come here. If you want it to attract a larger crowd, you'd have to be much less subjective in your writing/ articles. People aren't gonna come here to read about "10 things that piss Josan off". I read the article, but just because I know you. People might read it if it was a blog (and they knew you), or they might read it if you were a pornstar, but not otherwise.

Regarding your comments on the ezine...

I've asked people numerous times what kind of articles/interviews they want to read. No-one answers.

I do the ezine for myself and for a few others. Whether people choose to read my articles or Lina's stories or look at the artists' profiles is their choice. Also note, I'm not the only contributor to the ezine. If I was, there'd be no ezine and I would just set up a blog on myspace or live journal or some other such crap site. The ezine and this site have NEVER been about me and were never supposed to be. I'm just one of the contributors.

As far as personal opinion columns go...

When AKJ writes a personal piece, he's praised for his openness and honesty.

Almost every column Spider wrote was personal. No-one criticised him.

I write a column that's part observational humour, part introspective and I get comments like this.

Also, don't know about newspapers, magazines or websites in Germany but in NA, most columns are "personal opinion" columns.

Regarding your first comment, the traffic the site receives has never been an issue, it's the lack of community spirit and the lurkers on the forums that bother me.

As for your three numbered points... I'm happy you're happy.

just my 2 cents, but when you want to generate traffic, that means people who aren't coming/ posting yet, so how could you ask them? But still... people are fickle. It might be better to come up with a concept yourself and stick with it than try to please 4 (out of 40) people who answered to that.

I only used your article as an example because it was still on the back of my mind, but what I said goes for the articles in general, not just yours.

that's why I wonder what people might reply here. Of course, the lurkers will probably stay silent

of course you are, you big huggly bear.

of course colums are subjective, but they should tackle something of broader interest. Note that that means of interest to the people coming here. There have been lots of articles somehow pertaining to arts, but I doubt that the majority of posters on boards related to gaming (which is what WW evolved from) are very artsy people.

I think part of the problem is the past. I understand why Josan didn't want this to be "just" a gamer site, but the majority (if not all) of the original members came because they were gamers or friends of gamers.

I have no clue why I post here, so I guess it is just because I like the people here and I think I've found friends here (as much as is possible on the internet anyway). Heck, even SPJ has a place in the food chain.

Consider me a posting lurker.

The kid's right. If only so that we'll attract better trolls. SPJ isn't even funny any more.

Im not very sure why i've been here for such a long time, i suppose its because i made friends here, and originally something along the lines Runey summed up; obscure games, and allowing any topic to be discussed.

The kid is indeed right. It's something I've been saying for the three years we've done the ezine.

However, when I send out an email to the "Inner Circle", the staff and close friends here, and all I'm asking is for suggestions and a week later I've yet to receive one single reply or a post in the mod forum... It ain't happening any time soon.

I don't know if there's a misperception here but I'm not asking you people to get the interviews, or write them, I'm simply asking for suggestions for interviewees. It's as simple as a conversation you have with real life friends only it's on a forum.

*sigh*

This is almost embarrassing. A forum member, and a troll at that, does something none of our team or inner circle of friends can do.

A simple suggestion.

see. i'm right. get yourself a real team and have a kick ass site. you guys used to do interviews and get traffic. these lazy asses are more interested in editing my posts than making this place worth visiting

I think the biggest question is: Why do I keep this place online and why do I still come here? Right now, it's largely Jez and Lina that motivate me to keep this place going.

I have a love/hate relationship with the site/forums that often borders on apathy. And it's two-fold since the site and forums are two separate, yet obviously interconnected things.

With the site, as I always say, it could so much more than it is. There never really has been a team or staff. It's been largely just me, with waxing and waning enthusiasm from others here and there. There's no real concentrated, co-ordinated effort to promoting or growing it. In fact, the majority of traffic comes via a couple forums I promote the place on and via search engines.

At the same time, I've been quite happy with the relatively steady direction the ezine is going in. And I have hopefully found another regular columnist who writes a lot of articles on environmental issues.

With the forums, it's an old story but always worth re-telling: The weren't mine. I just inherited them.

Eldar asked Valqorez to help him set them up on his (Eldar's server) and he asked Capelworth and I to run them for him. Instead, Val just set them up on his own domain. Eldar then disappeared almost immediately and I was left holding the bag. In fact, as some of you will recall, for the first fourteen months, the forums weren't even attached to the site. They were at gamertalk.biz and eventually moved over to my domain.

I've tried to keep them going and have an obscene post count as a result (exceeding the 2nd and 3rd place post counts combined) but again, I'm fighting the battle largely alone. Here and there, one of you will manage to bring in a new member but we're pretty stagnant and since I keep the forums up largely for the sake of you folks, some of whom I consider friends it's equally frustrating.

There are so many site/boards on the net that do have reliable teams and growth. And we could be one of them. We just, unfortunately happen to be a site where the first five years had the vast majority of the "team" get depressed, disappear for months at a time and then randomly pop back in here and there. Still, I keep trying and keep hoping.
