Issue 14 - Artist's Profile - Annica Söderlund

Post by the paperboy » Thu Oct 01, 2009 6:08 pm

We're pleased to announce Annica Söderlund as our profiled artist this issue.

She's a gifted young woman from Sweden with her own approach to anime.

What fantastic pictures. Really, really great work. I particularly like A Small Gift, although saying that I think Apple Queen is my favourite. I'll be sure to check out Annica's website.

Interesting choice in leaving coloured pencils for digital colouring. Personally, I find using real pigments to be much more vibrant and dynamic.

Please... Enlighten us... *steeples fingers*

Well, enlightenment will only come if Annica joins the forums.

As for her work, I'm not an anime fan but I like her work, which she describes as her own style of anime.

A friend of mine likes it too. Her first words on seeing the title page for Annica's profile were "Oh! Faeries!". It works for the Celt in me too.

My thoughts too, I really think "genuine" anime/manga looks goofy. I would say Annica has distanced herself enough from the simplistic lines and two colour shading of anime to be "her own style" indeed. And, it is much better for it :)

My favourite is the one featuring the strawberry as the protagonist, but then I am a strawberry fan. The two humanoids make a nice supporting cast too

I am impressed by the patience that must have gone into the drawing of all the apples. While the "darker" pictures are nice, I think I prefer the light/bright pictures, as it seems to do the style more justice.

I completely lack that kind of patience. I could never draw that many apples. I can't draw to begin with so I'm always appreciative of artists like Annica.

I sent her a 'thank you' email when the zine went up (since Lina brought her to our pages, not me). If we're lucky, maybe she'll pop in and offer Magnus his 'enlightenment'.

This isn't really my cup of tea to be honest. Not that i have any good reason not to like it though.

Pretty nice pictures, but you can only stray so far ' ' and then it's no longer anime. It seems to me like anime has become a word to describe anything that doesn't quite fit in any of the 'old-school' genres. I agree with someone above who wrote something about your own style..

Hello everyone.

I'm Annica, the artist featured in this issue. I should have popped in sooner to answer if you had any questions or such. I apologize for the delay. I'll try to catch up.

First of all, I'd like to thank the staff for featuring my art. It's a great honor. Thank you!

Then, onto the question. Magnus wanted to know why I left colored pencils for digital paint. The answer is simply: Undo-button! :) When painting digitally, I can redo as much as I want, even change colors if needed.

As for South Park Jesus' question: Sweden is pretty chilly now in October :) Chilly, but very pretty with all the leaves changing colors.

I hope my answers were a bit enlightening.

Hello Annica. Glad you joined us.

We don't really have a staff. I just use the term to attempt to build some sense of camaraderie around here. And the honour is all ours by the way. So my thanks go to Lina for asking you and to you for gracing our pages. :)

As for SPJ, watch out for him. He's the type of kid that hits on every woman. Fortunately he seems to be growing up.

And I know we all hope you'll manage to pop in from time to time. You're certainly more than welcome.

Those with ball and chains around their feet are "Staff", the others (like me) are the gawking, rock throwing "spectators" who enjoy tormenting the "staff"

We don't have any staff. It's me and a few freelancers. You on the other hand, I'm not sure what the allure is for you. I hope it's not some secret man crush.
