Game Music

Post by silvar » Sun Aug 29, 2004 7:18 pm

According to the minute amount of new titles I've heard (read as: "less than two years old"), its my slightly inflated opinion that the composition of game soundtracks is a dead art. So I would like to put forth what audio masterpieces have tolerated my ears, for your opinion/commendation/debasing. Ye art of course welcome and requested to throw in your selections

so(es):
Hell March 1 & Radio 2 (Red Alert)
IWD1's opening and closing
IWD2' closing and the Targos Fight
Homeworld's Kadeshii confrontation and the Mothership launch
Cataclysm's Hiigara defensive
Most of Stronghold, especially "Dark Times"
Deus Ex's opening
Three Kingdom's opening
Cossacks tracks 4, 13 and 15
SC's Terran 3
Tib Sun's Pharotek

and that sadly is it
Eos #98 :
People who have something to be genuinely depressed about never make it to the internet.

Arcanum has a great score.
The music in Pharaoh is excellent.
The "evil" score for GalCiv is really nice.

Going retro style with this post by saying:

Final Fantasy 3 for the SNES.
The opening theme set the mood for the entire game and the end music was incredible. Also, the "Theme from the Veldt" was the best song in the game.

Wow. I gotta play that game again!

Vagrant Story (PS) wins my vote, and Icewind Dale (both) had pretty good music. Usually I'll end up putting proper music on otherwise

Torment, Megaman series and Fallout for some weird reason all got stuck in my head.

Most tunes by Mark Morgan (PS:T and Fallouts) and IWD on the PC

Actually, I'm not really that impressed by PC music, my c64 and Commodore Amiga having literally dozens of games with better music than the majority of current pc games (except those in the first line) :?

torment and diablo2's music scores are very good mood-tracks, for instance the diablo2 soundtrack features nicely as a background to p&p roleplaying.

i also like the intro of Morrowind a lot

and of course 'Serve the Hive' from starcraft...

I liked the Hive's music in PS:T. Targos fight in IWD2 wasn't bad, and Throne of Bhaal end fight was nice.

Mark Morgan most definately. PS-T then FO.

There's other good stuff out there but his work ranks highest for me.

I don't get why everyone loves the music in PS:T so much. It's not that good :?

Ehm... You don't have PS:T, Petor. If you just listened to a few tunes out of context, you're right, it's probably not as good.

I have the whole soundtrack, actually. And maybe if someone gave me the game so I could hear it in context, I might fell differently :D
