although my knowledge of docter who is shamelessly small apart from the great theme that screwdriver is indeed a very nice tool, reminds of the usb-vacuum cleaner and color-changing sink led
Those batteries are awfully priced in that strange country of yours btw.. (its E 5,- for four of thewm here)

Title: The 6th Non-Sense
My knowledge of Dr. Who is questionable. I think it was a rock band or something, maybe of that name or with a mute K, but that's the extend of my knowledge of Dr. Who (who?)

Quote:
I got some girl on the phone with a Deep South accent who'd never heard of Doctor Who. When I asked which they had, the old one (still shown on their site) or the new version (shown everywhere else) she said "the one you see is the one you get".

To quote the Ninth Doctor, "Stupid ape". This girl had no clue and shouldn't be working for the BBC, America, Canada or UK. Period.

I completely disagree, Noone needs to know Jack Schitt, when the policy is that simple and it's nice to see that it is.. that was before I saw the Canadian BBC site... Like a foot in a hose. BBC Canada has no clue, the girl is just a poor victim.

Well Jan, sometimes you take the time to make intelligent, informed posts like you did in Fluffy's atheism thread. Other times we get swill like this and your reply in the NAIL thread. "Hero to zero" to use your phrase.

First off, much like the Beatles, few indeed are those who haven't heard of Doctor Who. Major part of pop culture there. Did you miss the TARDIS in Fallout 2 for example? Especially for someone with your taste in movies/gaming, it's even more surprising.

Second, it's a good thing you don't own your own business. An employee should always be familiar with their employers products, especially when it's one of that company's major products and Doctor Who is a major money-making franchise for the BBC.

Third, they should know their current stock. The BBC is selling the correct model (the old one isn't even manufactured now). Big difference between the product in stock and a section of a website that isn't updated. And sales and customer service employees should know that.

Fourth, the call center is in the US. BBC Canada's website (which is much the same template as the BBC America site... company standards you know) has nothing to do with the call center employee's location. Globalisation my friend. That's why when you call HP tech support you get a rep in India.

And by the way, lads, thanks for reading whether you're Whovians or not. With a column, the subject varies. The writing is as equally, if not more, important as the subject.

I think CB and Phosphor were the only Doctor Who fans on the forums anyhow aside from me.

I had a lot of fun taking those pictures and writing the Cybermen and Dalek captions too but I guess you two have been living under a rock too long to notice.

The screwdriver seems like a very cool toy, but the lack of replacements for the UV is what's going to keep me from getting one. :( BTW, I do have some UK geek friends who may be able to assist you in getting those if the company doesn't come through.

Yeah, that is disappointing. But it's still a cool toy. And I'll let you know what happens with Character Options and getting those replacement nibs. I may need the help of your mates.

Well, I received a really nice email from ThinkGeek about the article. And today, I got a call from a gentlemen at the head office of Sunrise as well as a thank you email.

Tres cool.

I must sadly admit that I mostly know Dr. Who as the guy who had a scarf similar to Josans :?

Still an interesting read about adults and toys and geekiness though

But then, I collect metal miniatures for my constantly growing toy armies, which I paint in my rare spare time ;)

This pleases me. The Daleks... which I created my controlling that weakling Davros... kill a christmas teddy bear. How picturesque! A beautiful picture indeed.

I am glad to see you all riled up. It's been a long time since I've seen you so exited about something. :D I just hate to read all that rubbish, but it was your birthday and you deserved it, but now :| it's not your birthday any more and the glove has been thrown...

Prepare to die (of old age).

Until your next birthday, and the next and the next and the next, etc... You are gonna see all the wrinkles, grey hair, loose teeth, dementia and you'll know that it's my revenge. Hahaaaaaa...

Erm, hehe, anyway.. In my opinion, it's not the responsibility of the employee to know the exact business per se, it's the responsibility of the company to train the employee to act and behave in the best interest of the company, because leaving it all to the employee would simply create too much noise. Any professional manager know that employees must be trained in the corporate knowledge and spirit to perform at the best of the companys interest and abilities to be the depicted representatives of the company. Amateurism, however, is solely based on passion and self-motivation, which is a good thing for small companies that makes friends and connections and good 'vibes' for their products on a personal level, but that also creates a very differentiated service and experience depending on the specific person that serves you. It's about corporate knowledge, memory and attitude and then your own engagement and enthusiasm can make a hell of a difference, but there is common ground. Maybe BBC Canada is still based on amateurism, even though they probably state differently, if they even have a policy or a training program, and fooled some girl into believing that...

Regarding that girl that served you, you constantly refer to 'they' so I'm a bit confused, maybe you pissed her off, which wouldn't surprise me in light of your ... analysis just now, or maybe 'they' forgot to train her properly, but that doesn't disqualify her. It's completely unreasonable and unfair to expect that every employee should know everything about everything and even what's on the web, was it the web master in charge of Dr. Who gadgets you spoke too? Maybe he forgot to update the site and let that poor girl know about it? Is that her responsibility, you think? Eh

I think you make a mistake by instantly in every case to turn it into a personal issue and you also have a tendency to go for the throat of matters, where you deliberately ignore context and valid presumptions to make some really asinine comments. Like you did in the Nail thread as well. Maybe that's something you are taught at school, but please leave it there. My point was clear, but you had to turn it into bollocks of how ignorant I was about the band, when I in fact made that quite clear. But it was great fun to read. And here I thought you just got older and then you are still pretending to be in your twenties and even got people thinking you are.. no wonder, it shows.

Anyway, thank you for the opportunity to make a mess of myself again, was that your birthday present to me?

Oh Jan, you don't need me to make a mess of yourself. You do quite well on your own.

And while I appreciate your comments about training, the onus is still on the employee to want to learn/be willing to learn. As for whether I pissed her off... well, if I pissed her of by saying "Hi, how are you? I have a question... there's a product on your site I'm considering ordering however the picture is of an old, discontinued model, do you know which item you have in stock?" then, as I said, she has no business being in customer service.

It's quite simple really. This girl was a loud, brash, gum chewing twit. And considering my years in sales and customer service as a manger and trainer, I know good customer service from bad and she was abysmal. There is absolutely nothing personal about it. I don't expect every employee to know everything. What this girl should have done was say "One moment please, I'll ask" instead of saying "the one you see is the one you get" and hanging up the phone. And still, you miss the point about one call center and globalistation.

Now... how can I rile you up some more? I've got to head to the store so you'll just have to wait.

And never forget... you are older than me. You have far more wrinkles, grey hair, loose teeth and dementia than I ever will.

I do not get to watch much tv because they don't work good underwater but I don't understand why those things called Daleks would want to hurt a cute little teddy bear who tried to give them a Christmas present. That makes me very sad.

Teddy Bears are dangerous. Given the wrong name, they can kill you.

Oh Teddy Bears aren't that dangerous Gorth, stop scaring our little initiate. I also felt sorry for the bear. Being exterminated by a Dalek would be a drag.
