"Most interesting," Stylox said. "We really must make further investigations in regard to love."
"Yeah, it makes no sense. He had ten people, including a childling killed to save that woman. That's some strong stuff." Gazzt was very excited.
"Aye, it must be. There seems to be much we don't know about the humans yet. However, I'd still call this experiment a huge success."
"Yeah, it's the best one yet. The progress we've made…"
"Wait," Stylox interrupted. "What is he doing now? This isn't part of the experiment."
"Quick, get the recorders back on." Gazzt was just as surprised as Stylox. "What is he up to? Wait, he isn't going to..?"
"I think he is. This was a most unexpected turn of events."
Epilogue: Death
John and Rachel walked out of the restaurant in absolute silence. John had a very blank look on his face and just started walking towards his home. Rachel took a few steps after him, but he just ignored her. She thought he probably needed to be alone with his thoughts and just let him go. John didn't even look back to see her get in a cab, he just kept walking.
He didn't live that close to the restaurant and he didn't walk very fast, but 45 minutes later he came home. He stepped into the elevator, but instead of pressing the button to his own floor, he went to the top floor and then continued by the stairs up to the roof.
During the walk, the events of the day kept replaying themselves in John's head. His expression was totally blank, but inside he kept blaming himself for the deaths of those people. He didn't stand close enough to get any blood on him when they were shot, but he still felt the blood was on his hands.
He kept telling himself that if he had stuck to his way of life none of this would have happened and ten people would be alive.
He stood on the edge of the rooftop looking out over the city. The city seemed awfully silent to him. In fact he hadn't heard a single sound on his way home and he didn't hear a single sound now.
There were no stars in the sky, so the only light he had to go by was that from the streetlights far down.
He looked down on the empty street below him and now the tears started coming again. He began crying heavily and he realized what he had to do.
He knew that he would never be able to live with himself after today. He could only see one solution; there wasn't even a choice involved.
For the second time this night he closed his eyes while crying, then he took a step forward.
