I'd hoped to enjoy my Tuesday night class, Organisational Business Communication. After all, that is what I do, communicate. Personally, professionally and artistically.

And the instructor seemed competent.

The course was pretty much straight from the text book, discussions and assignments aside. When my view of the instructor's ability wavered was when I had to argue marks over my use of proper English spelling, ie; colour instead of "color", using the suffix "ise" instead of "ize".

Amazed that her marking criteria was Microsoft Word's "American english", globalisation notwithstanding, I sent her an email calling attention to the line "...in the name of Her Majesty, the Queen..." on the Canadian passport and to the Queen's presence on our currency. Canada is a Constitutional Monarchy after all.

I won my point, after all, she was not

unreasonable in the face of irrefutable facts, but that, coupled with further observations of her "teaching" ability, caused my interest to wane.

My individual assignments were easy and my final exam was a perfect 100% but I sacrificed my attendance and two major assignments further reduced my grade:

A presentation with a unprepared partner who didn't add my notes to the power point, forcing me to "wing it" while he proved to be almost illiterate, unable to read from a newspaper article and my major written assignment, a rough draft of an article on religion for this ezine that I never seem to finish.

My Final Grade:
A/80-89%/GPA 4.0

My Grade of the course/instructor:
C+/65-69%/GPA 2.5

I'm not sure how to describe my Wednesday night course. It wasn't bad, it was… blasé. I honestly can not recall the instructor's name.

She was competent, I had no actual complaint with her methods and she encouraged open discussions but I was left with an almost entirely "neutral" impression I ascribe to her opening night comment that "no-one has ever failed my class".

I'm not saying she just passed everyone. Your marks still depended on your effort and intelligence. I passed mid-term, final exam and the group assignment, which I enjoyed for the most part, painlessly (95% each). My participation was lower (80%) but working full-time with class four nights a week requires some time off.

My Final Grade:
A+/93.5%/GPA 4.2 - Distinguished

My Grade of the course/instructor:
B/70-74%/GPA 3.0
