Suspended Disbelief
Lyrical selections from the 1990s
Carry the Cross
Closing my eyes
I drift further into sleep.
So easy to hide away
behind the veil of a dream.
In the candle's light,
shadows dance on my wall
and in the flame I lose myself
to the sweet call of your song.
All these years in the back of my mind
I tried so hard, believing in you.
So hard keeping the faith,
seeing all the things that you do.
All these years I've carried your cross,
done everything that you've asked me to.
Sorry old friend, it's hard to say this
but I just can't keep believing in you.
Falling through stale air,
the space of a wasted breath.
In this starless night
I see myself so far away.
Looking through a stranger's eyes
as the days pass me by
and some times in the night
I even turn from myself.

soul searching religious rock, Key of C
Vox, electric lead & rhythm, bass, organ, drums
One of my favourite songs of my own. A commentary piece on religion. I still remember the night it was written, over at my old guitarist's apartment. We'd dropped some LSD and he had mesmerised himself with this arrpegiated two chord progression, which I made him play over and over while I wrote the lyrics for the verse. Hours flew by and the floor was covered in a tonne of crumpled up papers of discarded lyrics before I got the final draft. The chorus came easier.
