Suspended Disbelief

Lyrical selections from the 1990s

King Street

Never before have I been held
by the gentle hands of an angel,
never saw the sun
as it rises in the morning,
I only saw your eyes
and in them, the world
as it might have been if you were still with me,
it’s just not living without you.

I remember us reading Edgar Allan Poe,
by candle light, we’d just made love
and I remember us listening to Chopin’s Polonaise
but those days seem so far away now.

I walk down King Street,
past the bar where’d you’d always go
and through the window,
I picture you there
and you’re smiling for him
and I can’t help but feel
that I was just a toy to you,
something to keep you amused
until something better came along.

I remember us walking down the street
with a bottle of wine, we were holding hands
and underneath the cold winter sun,
I was always warm in your embrace.

Maybe it’s all my fault,
I know I was such a fool
but I’ll ask you now, please forgive me
I didn’t mean to be cruel to you.

In the night I lay awake
and I can still feel you beside me
but when I reach out to hold you
I know that you’re not there
and every day
the tears still come falling from my eyes,
on bended knees,
I’m begging you please,
please come back to me.

fragile. lamenting, Key of B flat
Vox, acoustic (capoed), bass, piano, strings, drums

"Commissioned" by the same woman as Roses was, this song was more involved. She told me that she was bored of standard three progression songs and insisted I have a fourth chord progression (and she wasn't even a musician). So, I did. And the music is brilliant and beautiful. The lyrics show a more intimate depth than my earlier writing (drawn as they were from actual events) but what I remember most was her insisting I serenade her. In a laundromat. Such a bohemian act of ego feeding.
