Lyrical selections from the 1990s

No Pretty Words

Light a candle
to keep the night away,
stare at the dead roses
lying on the floor
as I
try to understand
how empathy and love
turned to pity and scorn.

And I remember
lying at your feet,
watching the coldness
settle in your eyes
as you,
you said you’d had enough,
no pretty words could ever ease
the pain inside.

Day after day
I keep hoping I
will find the feeling that your leaving took away.
Night after night,
when I touch myself,
I find that I still call out your name.

Light a candle
to keep the dreams away
but the visions are the same,
you’re dancing on my grave
and you,
you were everything,
every hope and prayer
and the one who took away
my faith.

rock ballad, Key of A minor
Vox, electric, bass, piano, cello, drums

This song is one of my all time favourites, I consider it to be a perfect piece of three minute pop/rock. I love the imagery in the lyrics, it's one of my favoutite songs to sing using my full range and it's a simple, yet effective chord progression with some reverb and chorus effects.
