Suspended Disbelief
Lyrical selections from the 1990s
One Small Stone
Walked along the river,
lay on the grass
and looked up to the stars.
Staring up at the constellations
makes you feel small,
wonder who you really are.
Funny how throwing one small stone in the water
shatters the perfect image of your life.
I must have lain there a long time
‘cause I watched the moon rise
and ghosts dancing in the mist.
The wind was the gentle touch of a lover,
the cold just made me long for your kiss.
I smiled, closed my eyes and drifted of to sleep
‘cause I always find you waiting in my dreams.
Let me make love to you by candlelight
then cover you with satin sheets.
Let me lay my head on your pillow
and hold you as you sleep.
Yet how can I offer you comfort
when I can’t find peace
within myself.
The things they tell you
when you’re just a child
don’t prepare you for waking up by yourself.
Spend your life searching for something to believe,
despite the pain, you try to hide the tears.
I promised myself long ago
I’d find the life I’ve been denied
and I know all I’ll ever need
is the love within your eyes.

rock ballad, Key of D
Vox, acoustic, 12 str electric, bass, piano, cello, drums
This song represents a few firsts. It was the first song written on my first 12 string Rickenbacker. It was also the first of 17 songs written for/based on one relationship, over the course of three years.
I'd met an older, married woman who was a classical pianst. The intent was to work together as artists. We wound up lovers. I was young and naive enough to believe her when she said she'd leave him. It was to become a defining moment, personally and artistically.
