'Swedish Death Metal' by Daniel Ekeroth

Post by AngryKidJoe » Fri Apr 27, 2012 12:44 am

You all know that I'm a metalhead. I've been into Melodic Deathcore (which is a blend of death metal and hardcore [a more aggressive variant of punk] with an emphasis on melody). Through reading this book 'Swedish Death Metal', I've come across something pretty interesting. Death Metal was spawned from Hardcore Punk rock rather than anything else. What's interesting about this is that I made my transition to Death Metal from Punk/Hardcore.

Also, another interesting point is that while Hardcore came just a little before Death Metal, they were both created generally at the same time. American Hardcore was a huge 'niche scene' DIY movement. Bands like Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc ... had very dedicated fans that created fan'zines, started a world wide network of tape trading (mix-tapes).

Granted all the while this was happening on the West Coast of the US, the exact same thing (albeit a year later) the exact same thing was happening in Sweden with Death Metal. It's really interesting to see how the two cultures are similar. I also find it a bit neat that how my transition into Death Metal was exactly how it was created.

While I do listen to the odd metal track/band every now and then, I'm probably more of a "rock" person...

From my favourite web comic Scandinavia and the World

Thanks for introducing me to that comic. It's quite hilarious.

My pleasure. Of course, like all web comics, there are episodes that are better than others and some are just plain silly. Sometimes the comments are almost educational in the insight they give into different cultures and nationalities

Still, every now and then, some outstanding comic shows up.

Denmark and Norway are the gay lovers. Iceland is somebody from the Twilight movies, Sweden the geeky prude, America the happy go lucky teenager, Canada is America's more level headed neighbour etc.

Generally does a decent job of imbuing "countries" with personalities.
