HP Lovecraft and overrated writers

Post by Fluffy17 » Mon Apr 01, 2013 8:53 pm

I am sick of HP Lovecraft being touted as a good writer. His stories are derivative, bland, go on forever, bigoted against any type of religion and have no character development unless you're an evil god ('cuz hey all gods need to be VERY EVIL) that really only has the power to make people insane and basically mess with earth because stupid cultists summon them or just because they are jerks. Seriously why would anybody want to worship basically the beginning of tentacle porn anyway. It's not like these gods look like people or have a charismatic personality. Man the characters in his stories are dumb. Also Lovecraft was a friggin' racist. Once writing a book where the villain is an Medusa creature that is evil because she is biracial yet still sexy. Why does this guy get so much credit?

I can honestly say I've never read him. Well, I skimmed through something a friend had years ago, when I was in high school. Didn't impress me.

Nor do Stephen King or Anne Rice or a tonne of other writers that are supposed to be "great".

Steven King's an acquired taste. As is Anne Rice, granted I think Anne is less talented since all she has done is vampire. As for writers who I think is underrated is Robert E. Howard. Yes, a lot of people know of Conan, but asking who wrote him nobody knows.

Here's another one that I might get called a heathen for. J. Michael Straczynski, apart from Babylon 5. What has he done that made him so great? I have read most of his comic book career in Marvel and DC and they were pretty bad. He also wrote a fair amount of episodes of 80s cartoon series which I might check out but overall he seems like a very one-note writer.

That's just the way life is. A lot of extremely untalented people get famous and hyped with praise while a lot of talented people can't get published, get a recording contract, etc. Doesn't matter whether it's actors, writers or musicians. There's a lot of crap out there. A lot.

Yeah or it can be like JMS, their skills are only good in one media.

I like Lovecraft. I'll agree to agree with you in the slightest.

Really? AKJ's all about bleak, death and destruction, end of the world stuff. He'd probably join a cult of Cthulu if he wasn't afraid of Kenny's alter ego, Mysterion. ;)

Read an anthology of Lovecraft's short stories last summer and near the end of the book, couldn't wait to be done with it. It did seem to have the same theme over and over but the descriptive presentations were good. All involved some slime, eerie mists and definitely weird creatures in ancient abandoned houses (obviously before urban renewal became the trend) but being placed in old New England, I could see the locals going for his style of writing. I wouldn't say I'd want a steady diet of his work but for a once in a while foray into really oddball stuff, he'd do.

Well, least it's a nice idea but I'll settle for a few....well a couple, maybe three or four. Hell, how about one for each day of the week and we'll call it quits at that? That should be enough staff don't you think?

I really hate Lovecraft's "it's so indescribably horrofic!" bullshit. I'm reading your fucking writing so you can describe it to me you lazy son of a bitch!

Other than that huge pet peeve I really enjoy his writing.

I've found Rice to have developed her characters by giving each their own story so to read the entire series is dealing with various times and know what's about to happen once in a while. But it's no different than McCaffrey's Pern series where everyone goes off on their own tangents after being introduced as a supporting character.

lovecraft is totally over-rated. but lots of writers are. anne rice and stephen king come easily to mind. especially king. i'm always amazed at how much money you can make for being completely average verging utterly bad.
magnus wants me. he's so gay.

I don't see how he's overrated considering his era.

I've enjoyed some of Lovecraft in the past. I've done so partly because of its place as the 'first' of its kind within horror and the genre, but I've also enjoyed it because I find Lovecraft's xenophobia and sexual malfunctions fascinating. They trickle into his work in such odd ways I find it compelling.

Besides, you've gotta give that atmosphere some mad props ... Innsmouth is an incredible place willed with the promise and whisperings of childhood nightmares made flesh.
