Miss Toronto 2006

A Canadian woman living in Budapest.

We met when I was working for her bank. She sent me a plane ticket and an invitation to stay with her. She promised all these wonderful things: a job making great money, seeing the sites, this fairy tale romance...

Never happened. Any of it.

There wasn't even an illusion of romantic chemistry. And she was sick while I was there. Most of the time, she never wanted to leave her flat.

We went out a few times, I ventured out on my own near the end but it wasn't what I expected and that cast a pall over what should have be a fantastic first trip to Europe.

There seemed to be an element of friendship but that didn't last more than a month after I got back. She was a spoiled little rich girl and she seemed to be jealous of the fact that I met someone else there.

And she never sent the pictures I accidentally left on her computer.

Miss Budapest 2006

A beautiful, intelligent and successful Hungarian woman I met in my month in Budapest.

She was one of my English students. After the first two weeks, she became the only reason I stayed.

When I came home to Canada, the idea was to move back to Budapest to be with her. But after two months of phone calls and emails she was changing her mind every week:

We'd be lovers, then just friends, then lovers again, then we'd live together, no, we'd live apart, but as lovers...

In the end, it wasn't a move I was willing to make. Moving to another country is one thing but when you don't speak the main language and the only person you know keeps changing their mind...

I wound up going back to school instead. Still, it was a motivating little fantasy for a while.

So you see...

Women can not be trusted.

They will lie, they will cheat, they will look out for themselves and not give a damn who gets hurt as long as they get theirs.

As my old baseball coach used to say: "I have met the enemy and it is them."

In Closing

What can I say?

I think you can see the cause of my natural highlights...

Wait a minute. My mistake. I've got it all wrong. Women never lie. They just change their minds.

If chivalry is indeed dead, I must be the idiot keeping it on life support.

Exceptions

There are some very notable exceptions out there. There remain women of beauty, compassion and virtue on this Earth.

They're just damn hard to find.

Originally, this article was going to be very scathing but as I wrote it, it mellowed quite a bit. I have some degree of affection and compassion for each of them. I must.

Well, except Carmen, who really is a complete and utter bitch.
